As I’ve said, I was really looking forward to btob’s comeback. Considering it seems like teasers were released for the entirety of the month, I lost track of the release date and as soon as I woke up this morning I saw the news that they released the video, and the song was produced by Brave Brothers, who slayed everyone in 2013 with 4Minute’s tracks, and BESTie’s “Love Options.” So I had high hopes; even though I don’t listen to most of the music Brave Brothers produces for male artists, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt that the song would be amazing like all of the work they do with female artists.
I’m watching the video, and I’m basically side-eyeing it the entire time.
The video itself is fine. It actually think it’s kind of funny since it’s like a parody of all of the American music videos that were super popular back when I would watch VH1 when I stayed at my Grandmother’s house waiting for my Mom to pick me up. I enjoyed how the cars were accessories since the song is basically called “Beep Beep”, so what else were they supposed to use; bicycle horns? But I do like how the director still kept some btob playfulness by giving them the kid’s cars too. The girls dancing…I’m surprised were actually in the video. I didn’t take it as trying to follow the sexy concept trend as much as they’re general female back up dancers and it’s following the tradition of “pretty girl(s) + cars = successful music video”. Plus I didn’t see anything wrong with how they were dressed; really no different than the girls in B1A4’s “Baby Goodnight” video.
Anyways, the song is kind of a mess. As much as I want to vomit as I type this, it sounds like EXO’s “Growl” mixed with the new BTS mess of a song called “Boy In Luv” (yes, LUV, not ‘love’, ‘luv’, because they’re still living in 2007 Myspace age, apparently). To be fair, since both btob and BTS had February comebacks, let’s just say btob’s track was influenced by almost any other BTS song since those all sound the same to me, anyways (to their credit though, at least they have a distinct style already).
Of course I have no idea what the lyrics mean, because apparently CUBE is too good to have English CCs – that’s one thing I really like about Loen’s videos, even if the CCs aren’t 100% accurate, us International Fans can still get a good idea of the general meaning of the song.
As for btob, as you may know, I know none of the members except for Ilhoon – he’s the only one I can pick out in the group, and I love him dearly. That being said, I enjoyed his opening, since he should always be the cute!visual of anything ever, but then for 90% of the song I was like “Wtf where is that cutie pie Ilhoon, don’t you tell me those basic Brave Brothers gave CUBE a song where Ilhoon gets like nothing, he’s NOT THE ACUTAL VISUAL…” but nah, his rap was at the end. Which was actually great, because the build up made it totally worth it since, I really enjoy his rap style. Ilhoon opening and closing the song should be a trend btob always follows.
This kid sang a majority of the song, so I’m guessing he’s the main vocal? As I said, I can’t put any members’ names to faces aside from Ilhoon, but overall it seems like aside from the above member, the line distribution was pretty equal, which always makes me happy regardless of the group
(except Super Junior, because Kyuhyun should get all of the lines in every song).
Anyways, it’s not that I don’t like the song, but it’s just kind of a mess. I’m sure it’ll do well since btob is pretty popular for 2012 rookies who aren’t EXO and BAP who both blew up, and the song is a mix of the style popular boy groups are using for their songs. But I can say, it’s definitely not my favorite btob song, even though it is cute and overall suits their style; plus I’ll be singing “뛰뛰빵빵” in my head for the next 10 years.
Basically, I just hope CUBE tries to get Seo Yongbae and Seo Jaewoo, the producers of “Second Confession back, or tries to enlist the help of Shinsadong Tiger, and ditches Brave Brothers for the group. I think for all the promotion this song has already received, it didn’t live up to the hype. I get that btob is still a newer group and are trying to find their sound, but between “Thriller” catching flack for being “too-VIXX-like” and now “뛰뛰빵빵” sounding like a mashup of EXO and BTS, I feel like they’re moving in the wrong direction.
