Now I’ve been to my fair share of concerts. I’ve seen Britney Spears, A*Teens, (I was under 10 years old please don’t judge me), Maroon 5 (2 times), Iron Maiden, KISS, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham (2 times), Vampire Weekend, Lana Del Rey – and they all suck live compared to B1A4 (except maybe Lindsey Buckingham, but they’re like on par and he’s hella old).
Where do I even begin to describe the flawlessness that is B1A4? It’s very difficult to, obviously, but witnessing it in person for the second time is obviously the best thing that has ever happened to me. The first time I saw them was on May 11, 2013 at the Dream Concert in South Korea. I only went to it so I could see Hyuna (who didn’t even perform with 4Minute due to illness), Secret, and SNSD (which I am forever thankful I was able to see them as 9 before tragedy struck). I basically had to sit through a bunch of people I was either only slightly partial to, or didn’t care about at all. B1A4 came on right after the bane of my existence, EXO, so maybe it was due to that, or the fact that they were so cute on stage, or “What’s Happening” was so catchy that I went out on Tuesday, bought all of their albums, and was late to my class because I missed my trains. Oops.
A year and some months later, I find out they’re coming to NYC for the Road Trip tour. I live about 3 hours from the city, and at the time of the announcement was unemployed and hella broke. I managed to get the money for the tickets but then found out the tickets were being sold the same day I had a job interview. I almost canceled my interview, but then ticket sales got moved to the next day, and I now am employed at the company I had the interview for AND I had pretty decent SEATS for B1A4. Yay for choosing the adult route for once in my life.
So it’s now two months later and I’m heading to NYC on the bus with my mom. The bus is running late due to traffic, so my anxiety is catching up with me. I almost twist my ankle on the way to the hotel. My mom makes us get dinner – and the line is already going around the block. She’s pretty old and is considered disabled by the government, but the venue douchebags would do nothing about it (even though none of them could say the name of the performers properly). Honestly I’m still very upset over venue choice for this concert. I understand NYC is huge and venues fill up quickly, but a venue with mostly standing room is unacceptable. I know for a fact every other venue for US Road Trip Dates are all seating. So why did I get screwed and have to pay more for my seat that’s further back than people at other venues paid who get to sit closer? Eurgh. I wanted VIP so badly, but I had no desire to stand during the entire concert. Last time I did that, I ended up getting groped. Granted most of the audience at B1A4 were under 21 and female, but I still had no desire to stand for 2 hours. WM, Fix Ur Shit next time.
So luckily, some sweet BANA from Long Island let my mom and I cut her in line so we could get in the venue and sit down faster. If you ever read this, we appreciate your kindness very much!!!! We had seats so I don’t even know why the venue people were being jerks, since I know with GA it’s first come first serve, but when you have reserved seats, why should it even matter?
The merchandise was absolute crap. If you’ve seen the Japan Road Trip merchandise, you’ll know what I’m talking about. We only had a kinda ugly snapback, a hoodie (not even as nice as the Japan one, but I still bought it for $60 bucks. And the girl at the counter was out of it, so if I wasn’t honest I could have gotten it for $35), a teeshirt, and Solo Day albums. The Solo Day albums were $30 – I paid $25 for mine including a poster from KpopMart….what a rip off. The promoters had lightsticks for pre-order but I didn’t want to pre-order anything.
The venue played B1A4 songs while we all piled in before the concert. My mom didn’t understand why they’d play the song by the artists. At every other concert I’ve been to, they don’t do that – they play related-genre music (i.e. at Fleetwood Mac, they always played classic rock songs, but not Fleetwood Mac themselves). I didn’t mind it at all though – I mean I’ve listened to “이게무슨일이야” about 700 times, so what’s one more, right?
So finally the boys all come on stage, looking fly in white pants and a navy jacket. Jinyoung AKA My Bias AKA The Worst Member kept his closed the whole time. Lame. The rest of the boys unbuttoned theirs for added sex appeal for the teenagers.
They opened with “OK” followed by “Beautiful Target” – I did get up and dance during those songs, as well as the other singles I knew the dances to. Of their main releases, the only one they didn’t perform was “Baby I’m Sorry” – and I’m admittedly a bit upset over it since I consider it one of my favorite B1A4 songs. Though, they actually did play a majority of my favorite songs, so I suppose I can’t complain too much about this slightly obvious overstep. Maybe it’s because Jinyoung realized how grossly auto-tuned it is? Maybe they didn’t want to have a dancing party time? Who knows. The only other slight complaint I have is how many Who Am I songs were played. Let’s Fly was underrepresented (which I’m fine with, since that album is mehhh and I probably would have walked out if they did “Bling Girl” because that is the worst Jinyoung-written song to ever happen), but they literally only did “이게무슨일이야” from that mini, and that’s basically unacceptable. I really did not need to sit through “예뻐” or “Amazing” instead of “별빛의 노래” or “몇 번을”. I was pleasantly surprised by Ignition‘s representation aside from the obviously missing “Baby I’m Sorry” – but they did do “This Time is Over” – something I didn’t remember seeing on a previous setlist that was floating around.
From my best memory, here was the setlist in it’s entirety (in order as much as I can remember; I was high on life during this concert so I may have forgot something or put it in the wrong order. I’m 999999% sure they also did “Only Learned Bad Things” but I could be wrong, and it seems like they didn’t according to what I’ve seen online?????):
- Beautiful Target
- English Talk (Baro and CNU talked in English the most, Jinyoung was third and Sandeul and Gongchan said very little but were still cute!)
- I Won’t Do Bad Things (나쁜 짓 안 할게요)
- Oh My God
- Because of You (너 때문에)
- Jinyoung Talk in Korean w/ Translator while being a little shit
- Tried to Walk (Acoustic) (걸어 본다)
- This Time is Over
- Backstage Video of B1A4 Actin’ a Fool
- Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door (Jinyoung played guitar and the panties came off, basically) [Bob Dylan Cover]
- Wonderful Tonight (Acoustic)
- You Make Me a Fool (내가 뭐가 돼)
- Lonely (없구나)
- Solo Day
- Britney Spears-esque costume change
- Chu Chu Chu (With lucky BANA who had on the same pants as Jinyoung)
- Pretty (예뻐) (during which they interrupted the song, asking who is the prettiest in the audience. I obviously jumped up first yelling “ME!” and doing TTS’ signature “Twinkle” move despite my busted up left arm (it’s in a brace, even as I type this). After some cheers from the audience, Baro said “You’re (audience) all Pretty” to which my mother yelled ‘YOU’RE FULL OF SHIT’)
- What’s Going On (이게무슨일이야)
- Drunk On Water (물 한잔)
- Who Am I?
- Baby Goodnight (잘자요 굿나잇)
- You Are My Girl – Jinyoung and Gongchan went into the VIP Section to take pictures with lucky BANA. At that moment I regretted not getting VIP.
- In The Air
- IF (너만 있으면)
- Ending w/ Bows and Goodbyes
They were very thankful and bowed three times to the audience at the end of the show. I honestly bet they left the venue crying. Most of us knew fan chants, people brought signs and lightsticks, I wore my official Hat’s On BAAAA hat, and the boys were really well-received by the audience. Baro (or CNU?) said they’d come back to New York. BUT considering Super Junior has said the same thing and it hasn’t happened yet, I won’t hold my breath. I’m also hoping that if they do come back to the US they’ll do a show in Boston or Hartford, CT instead of NYC since that was a very long, expensive, trip for me. I’d honestly just assume fly to another city with a venue with VIP tickets that allow you to sit down and pay the flight and hotel costs. Granted, this is a personal grievance of mine and had nothing to do with the show itself – it’s just very inconvenient, and NYC is also a horribly expensive city (I saw Oreo cookies for $7.99…they’re $3.50 at home).
As I said, they did a lot of Who Am I songs, and I honestly would have taken “Pretty” out for “So Fine” or if it had to be another WAI song, I would have preferred “Love Then” – but they did do a lot of slower songs already; and I was quite pleased to see the acoustic version of “Wonderful Tonight” as well as “Drive” – especially since “Drive” is probably the best song on Solo Day. The mix of “Chu Chu Chu” they performed is infinitely better than the album version, and I would absolutely love for them to release it officially. In The Wind was probably the most ‘full’ album played, but overall they had a nice mixture of songs from each album… I think the setlist flowed really well, though I think they should have left on a high/upbeat note with either “You Are My Girl” or “In the Air” being played very last.
They were all so cute during the concert. Jinyoung being my bias, he was the member I did focus on the most, and my horrible pictures (I bounced around a lot…and these kids don’t stand still) are mostly Jinyoung focused – even with group shots, he was my primary focus. Whatever concert pictures I have uploaded here were taken by me on my Galaxy Note 3, and have not been edited in any way. I also will not be uploading any videos at this time, as my fangirl singing and screams will be going in the vault for the time being.
On the note of fangirl screams, I would say Baro had the most overall. CNU was second, and Sandeul was third. Jinyoung and Gongchan were pretty evenly tied for last, meaning, my assumptions about who has the most fans (at least in my neck of the woods) was pretty accurate.
Jinyoung is by far the cutest member. Maybe because I was paying the most attention to him, but I noticed so many embarrassing things he did throughout the night. I almost changed my bias to CNU due to the amount of second hand embarrassment, but I just can’t do it. Jinyoung was smiling the whole time, doing his little grampa dances whenever it wasn’t his part, he waved to the audience a lot, and as soon as the costume change happened, his glorious arms were on display for me to drool over throughout the rest of the show. I made damn sure whenever he he slayed his solo parts (his parts during all of the ballad-y songs were so damn good, and honestly that kid doesn’t get enough credit for his voice – or anything else he does for B1A4, but I digress), to act like a fool for him. I also made sure to do the “What’s Happening” fanchants during his speaking parts that start and end the song, and only like 5 other BANA did, so he seemed pretty happy at least some people knew it. Can I just marry him and get it over with?
So my mom, who is 58 years old accompanied me to the concert. She was one of a few moms, but probably one of the oldest people in the audience. There was a super old couple who had hightouch passes, and I’m like ‘uh what do u want to meet 20-smth year old boys for????’. They were taping the whole concert right in front of me so my “JINYOUNG I FUCKING LOVE YOU YOU’RE SUCH A LOSER” is probably on a few of their recordings.
Back to my mom, she was pretty funny during the concert. Here are some of the mom-isms from her during the weekend:
She pointed out that the “Chu Chu Chu” girl had on the same pants as Jinyoung.
She called Baro out on lying about everyone being pretty. (see set list comments)
She stated that CNU grabbed at his dick more than necessary.
Gongchan (“the kid with the white striped pants”) had a hard-on.
She said “Sorry Sorry” was her favorite song they did.
I asked her if she could name a member and I’d give her $5 million if she could. She says, “Uh, I know there’s one with a ‘young’ in it but I forget the first part.” So close, mom, so close.
She basically only didn’t shit-talk Sandeul. I asked her who was the best looking, and she said Jinyoung – obviously. She said they put on a really good show and she enjoyed it, so I’m using this as further proof that B1A4 appeals to all ages and their cuteness will take over the world.
I really wish I had the money to fly to another concert they’ll be performing while in the USA. You can tell they’re so happy to be here, and that they appreciate their fans a lot. They sang live during the entire concert, and it was really cool how they had a live band and did some remixes of their popular songs to fit accordingly. The newer songs didn’t need as much ‘mixing’ – and I think that kind of shows how Jinyoung is planning to use live bands as he’s composing. The graphics in the background were really neat – and I especially loved how silly the “이게무슨일이야” graphics were – they basically re-created the music video. I think my favorite was either during “Oh My God” or the countdown during “This Time is Over.”
B1A4 deserves so much praise for what they accomplish in their musical ventures. The first time I saw them live, it made me become a fan. And the second time, it cemented as to why I am a fan. They produce a wide range of musical genres, and can pull each one of them off. Each member is talented, and even though I still don’t care for Baro or feel his rapping is necessary in every song, each of them has their place in the group. They obviously all enjoy what they do and are very thankful to have fans across the globe. I hope someday they can be recognized by the Grammys for their contributions to music, because even though they’re technically a boyband who sing and dance on stage, they write their own music, and Jinyoung even produces what they do.
B1A4 one of the most talented musical acts in the world right now, period.
It hurts my heart I was only able to see them during this one concert, and who knows, when, or if, I’ll get to see them again. But, I am very thankful I was able to see them during their first international tour, and hope I can once again whether it be in Korea, or in the USA.
